Is it Time For Technology to Be Used in Cricket?

August 25th, 2008

International cricket’s governing body, the ICC, appears to think that the answer to this question is yes. A referral system was suggested for the England - South Africa series, but the hosts declined to use the policy and so the forthcoming contest between Sri Lanka and India will be first series where referrals are tested.

Each team will be allowed three unsuccessful challenges per innings, with only the batsman on the receiving end of the decision and the fielding captain able to make the challenge. There is therefore not a limit on successful challenges, so a flurry of overturned decisions could be embarrassing for the on-field umpires.

However, they should not feel undermined by technology. It is an extra resource and will endorse their good judgement as much as it highlights errors that are forgivable in the pressurised environment of Test cricket. Umpires use technology to help get line calls right in three of the grand slam tournaments and each challenge is dealt with quickly - the official’s authority is strengthened as players fell less inclined to argue with technology. Referrals are also used to general good effect in rugby.

This referral system has been used on a trial basis before, but was abandoned after one year in English domestic one day cricket. None of the challenges made by the players resulted in a change of decision, whilst some apparently incorrect decisions were left unchallenged. It will be interesting to see if players actually know when they are out and bowlers might get a shock when they realise most of their LBW appeals would indeed have gone over the stumps.

There will never be 100% accuracy - TV cameras cannot always detect thin edges for example - so batsman still receive the benefit of doubt to some extent. On-field umpires still make the final decision - the ICC is keen to point out that the system is for consultation, not referral.

Today’s Most Popular Cell Phone Gadgets

July 23rd, 2008

Technology gets more impressive every day. Only a few generations ago, making phone calls required a wired connection to the system, and it wasn’t long before that time that phones didn’t exist at all. But now, people take instant communication to be a fact of life. Cell phones have extended this connection even further. But technology certainly didn’t stop with cell phones. Today, cell phone gadgets abound, making it difficult for the savvy consumer to know which, if any, cell phone gadgets are really a good deal.

There are lots of popular cell phone gadgets today, many of which might seem somewhat confusing to some users. Of course, the devices that are compatible will vary from phone to phone, but there are lots of different cell phone gadgets that almost all users can enjoy. One of the most popular types is the hands-free headset. This device makes it possible to talk on your phone while freeing up your hands to do more important things like typing, working, or driving. Plus, even if your hands are empty, you can choose to use a hands-free headset to affect the image of a person who is in sync with the latest technology.

Of course, no cell phone gadget can really take the place of a reverse phone lookup. Reverse phone lookups are websites that specialize in letting users learn more about the strange numbers that may occasionally call their phones. With a reverse phone lookup, all you need to do is enter a strange phone number and click “search.” Even if the number you’re researching is linked to a number that won’t be found in the white pages, such as a cell phone or other unlisted phone, you can get the name and address of the owner.

The Growth of the Internet

June 21st, 2008

It doesn’t seem to long ago when the word Internet was a novel term and a term feared by many. Fear borne out of ignorance. People were talking about the Internet but few really understood it. No more than 10 years ago, most people had heard of the Internet but so few used or even had the capacity to use it.

The boom in PC’s came in around year 2000. People could dial up the Internet and what seemed a quick on line experience, is now seen as slow and laborious. But the Internet had arrived and would soon be commonplace. Every home should have one soon became the slogan. And here we are today, year 2008 and pressing quickly into year 2009, and almost every home has got one. A PC that is.

Ten years ago, our Grand Parents would have been, by and large, totally lost with the power of the computer. Today’s Grand Parents, however, can’t get enough of the PC and the Internet. The Grey Brigade are up to speed, computer literate and have become shoppers on the Internet. What a transformation in such a short time and how brilliant it all is. No more the bus route into town to shop for the groceries, the gifts, the travel tickets et al.

It is all available on line and as a global nation, we are all on line. The growth of the Internet has been nothing short of phenomenal and has encompassed all walks of life, all ages and sex, and of course, all religions too. Me? I am shopper! And thank goodness for the growth in the Internet and Internet shopping.

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Google AdWords

May 14th, 2008

Websites thrive on traffic. Business websites need customers. Blogs need consumers to read them and subscribe.

As a website owner, you’ll probably spending a large portion of your time driving traffic to you website. There are several ways to bring traffic. You can optimize pages for the search engines. You can write articles and submit them. You can use social networking to build relationships on the internet.

One very important method of driving traffic is Google AdWords. AdWords has one important difference from all the other methods mentioned. AdWords costs money. You design an ad for your website, and then Google places your ad on their search engine results, in the paid or sponsored links section. You pay Google every time someone clicks your ad.

However, AdWords has advantages that offset the costs. Why should you use Google AdWords to drive traffic? What are the arguments for AdWords?

1) Google AdWords will start sending your website traffic immediately.

It takes time for a website to rank high enough to appear on organic search results. It takes time to write articles and submit them. It takes time to build a social network. All the other methods of driving traffic require an investment of time. These alternatives require hours of work to establish, and then may take weeks or months to show results.

AdWords will start sending traffic to your website today. As soon as you create a campaign and an ad, you can begin getting traffic.

2) Google will help you every step of the way.

Google makes a significant portion of their revenue from AdWords ads. Google makes money by you participating in AdWords and wants you to succeed. Google publishes user guides, blogs and other information to make using AdWords as easy as possible.

3) AdWords provides the information about your campaign that you need to succeed.

AdWords provides keyword research tools so you know what consumers are searching for. AdWords helps you evaluate your campaign after it is created. AdWords supplies you with the impressions, click through rates and costs of you campaign. It informs you of the Quality Score for your ads, on a scale of 1 to 10. It offers advice on how to improve the Quality Score.

4) You can control the cost of AdWords with the proper strategy.

Knowing how to obtain a good Quality Score for your ad can reduce your cost per click. A well optimized campaign can deliver traffic for just a few cents per click. The Free AdWords Strategy Guide describes step by step how to optimize your ads.

5) Anyone can obtain the top ad positions.

AdWords values quality over price. AdWords doesn’t simply award the highest ad position to the highest bidder. The ad quality score is the primary factor in ad positions. That means you can advertise in highly competitive markets, using a good Quality Score to beat out other advertisers who are simply spending more. The Free AdWords Strategy Guide reveals exactly how to get a good Quality Score.

Are you over paying for your AdWords campaigns? Have you experienced any of the following problems using Google AdWords?

  • High cost to maintain your AdWords campaign
  • Poor quality score affecting your bids
  • Low Click Through Rate for your ads
  • Minimum bid for your keywords is too high
  • Landing pages that don’t convert

Google’s Free Browser Chrome to Take on Microsoft

April 11th, 2008

Google Inc., Owner of the most popular Internet search engine, posted its biggest gain in four months in Nasdaq trading after introducing a browser to challenge Microsoft’s decade-long dominance of the market. The program, known as chrome, will isolate flawed web pages so users can close them without shutting down the entire browser, and will make it easier to run other applications without downloading them to a computer, Google said.

The software opens a new front in Google’s fight with Microsoft, whose Internet Explorer controls more than 70/ of the browser market. Google is trying to parlay its success over Microsoft in online searches into an effort to court users who want e-mail, calendars and word processing through a browser instead of products such as Microsoft’s Word and Excel.

“They’re looking at the big picture of their business,” said David Smith, a Gartner analyst in Bedford, New Hampshire. “They’re looking at the speed at which browser development is going and they’re trying to accelerate it.” Google faces an uphill battle against internet Explorer, Which has led the browser market since it passed Netscape Communications’ Navigator in 1999, because the Microsoft program come pre-installed on personal computers. Internet Explorer’s lead in the Web browsing market is followed by Mozilla Corp’s Firefox with 20/ and Apple’s Safari with 6.4/, according to research firm Net Applications of Aliso Viejo, California.

A loss of browser users to Google might curb Microsoft’s ability to lure people to its search engine, the default option for Web queries on Internet Explorer. Microsoft, the world’s biggest software maker, released a new version of Explorer last week for testing. The software lets users control whether it saves the sites they’ve visited and can keep Internet sites from tracking user activity.

“the browser landscape is highly competitive,” said Dean Hachamovitch, general manager Internet Explorer, in a statement. “People will choose Internet Explorer 8 for way it puts the services they want right at their fingertips, respects their personal choices about how they want to browse and, more than any other browsing technology, puts them in control of their personal data online.”

Google is the default search engine on Firefox, Safari and Opera Software ASA’s Opera, browsers that represent about 27/ of the market combined. Chrome’s address bar may also help Google attract users. It will have a double function, allowing people to type in web site location and offering suggestions for Google searches. That may help keep people from going to Microsoft or Yahoo for their Internet queries, Gartner’s Smith said.

Window Hardware and Shutter Hinges

March 5th, 2008

In window hardware, shutter hinges are just a piece that keeps the shutter fastened to the wall, isn’t that right? It is actually not true. Shutter hinges offer much more to your home improvement than simply as a fastener. By learning more about how you can use this piece of window hardware, you can help to make the most of your home improvement project.

Changes in Style

Nowadays, shutters are mainly used for the aesthetic look of the home, but there are other uses for them, too. In the past, window shutters were mainly used for more functional purposes, including protecting the home from storms and extreme weather by allowing the house to be shut up.

These exterior shutters were made to be closed from the home’s interior by simply pulling them closed and securing them with a latch. When they are closed, they helped to protect the glass from storms and weather conditions. In some parts of the country, these shutters are still used to protect against weather, especially in areas that are hurricane prone. These help to protect a homeowner’s investment during a hurricane or bad storm.

Shutter hinges have changed with the different uses of the shutters. You can find hinges that are function and stay hidden or you can find ones that are more decorative, like those in the past. Whichever style you desire, you are sure to find them in your local window hardware section at the home improvement store.

There are two different styles of shutter hinges that were used most commonly. These include the Mortise hinge and the strap style hinge. Each of these hinges has their own design and style. The Mortise shutter engine is the most fancy of the two. It resembles the shape of an “N” and it helps to fasten the shutters to the wall. They are normally made of cast iron, which makes them very strong and durable. They swing open and closed very simply for added function.

The strap shutter hinge features a bar bracket that is wide and then begins tapering as it reaches the shutter. In many cases, there is a decorative feature at the end of the shutter hinges, most commonly a spade shape. This is to enhance the look of the shutters.

Shutter Hinges For Today

Replica and reproduction shutter hinges can allow you add the style of the past to your new or remodeled home. If you prefer a more contemporary look, then you will be happy to know that there are more modern styles and designs available as well that offer a clean and contemporary look. Other options include a nickel or brass hinge that is simpler in style and not quite as ornate. These hinges can act much like jewelry does for a person to accessorize the look of the windows and the home.

Linux Tape Backup Software - The Solution to Your Storage Needs

January 3rd, 2008

Linux tape backup software is one of the best storage solutions available today. While it is only compatible with Linux operating systems, it can be used to backup the records of business operations at the end of each day or week, or even from a remote database if the stations are linked in a network. A cron job will allow the system to complete the backups without any human supervision, and you will simply be notified via email when it has been completed.

The Rationale Behind Tape Backups

Many people have had the unpleasant experience of having their computer systems crash, causing them to lose valuable data or customer contacts because everything on the hard drive was wiped out. If you are one of these unlucky people, then you will likely appreciate the value of the information in the next few paragraphs.

Losing such a large amount of data in the event of a computer crash can be extremely costly, as not only do you lose your valuable data, you have to account for the time and labor required to rebuild your database.

The following suggestion can save you large amounts of time and money in the event of a system crash, along with being fairly easy and simple to enact. Many people have heard of the concept of backing up their important data and information, but many do not do so on a regular basis because they do not believe that will be the unlucky ones who suffer.

Backing up your system simply involves storing replicates of important data on a separate system that can then be used to restore your main system to its original state in the event of a crash or accidental deletion.

Backup copies of your data must be stored on some form of storage media, whether you choose to use CDs, floppy disks, or other forms of storage media. All provide methods of backing up your information, since you can restore data to your system using these forms of storage media.

Many businesses have opted to use magnetic tape as their storage media because it is relatively cheap in terms of the storage space you receive for the amount of money you spend on it. Magnetic tapes are more convenient than conventional hard drives and are able to store more data than CDs or floppy disks.

While there is the option of backing up your data to an offsite location, many companies are not comfortable with this as the information being transferred may be private and confidential.
